I just received this little amplifier today and I m quite impressed. I researched amps like this for a bit, but there is very little out there for this particular unit. I really liked the looks of it and its compact size so i decided to take a chance. Am I glad I did I m pretty old school when it comes to amplifiers and have only ever considered a typical large heavy Class AB design to be the only way to go for quality audio. I never expected a tiny chip to be able to put out good sound, at least not at any real volume. Boy was I wrong. Currently, I have this unit connected to a pair of Polk Monitor 50 s, 89db sensitivity. This little amp drives them hard, like call the cops loud but at the same time, the sound is amazing, great bass and a nice warm quality. The 80Wx2 power rating might be a little optimistic, but it DOES seem to hold its own against a 60w Yamaha A-S301 which I also own a 350-400 amp At this point, I ve only tested the Bluetooth connection works perfectly and the USB DAC connection also worked straight away on my Win10 PC without the need of any drivers The DAC has a max sample rate of 24-bit 96k. Streaming sources sounded great, but FLAC files really made this unit shine, amazing quality The unit itself is well built, all metal construction and has a very bright LCD display that shows source, volume, eq setting, sample rate, and audio format. The volume control is the only physical control on the unit that both presses and rotates. A long press powers on the unit, a short press brings up the ability to cycle through the various adjustment options, another short press allows adjustment of the chosen option. Once complete, the control goes back to a normal volume knob you adjust as expected. If anything could be improved, it would be this control scheme but I ll talk about that later. The front panel also has a standard 1 8 3.5mm mini headphone jack and the IR sensor for the included and also made out of metal remote. Around back are a set of reasonable quality binding post connectors which either accept banana plugs or bare wire. The back also contains a plethora of inputs, analog audio via a 3.5mm jack, toslink optical, a coax digital via a 3.5mm jack, micro USB, a connector for the Bluetooth antenna, and finally the 24v DC power connection. The included power brick is HUGE, larger than the amp itself. Output of the brick is rated at 24v 6.67A, but it runs cool to the touch and powers the amp to ear splitting levels. When nothing is playing, the amp is dead quiet, I could not detect any hiss with my ear right up to the tweeter Fit and finish overall is very nice, the notable exception being the volume knob itself which brings me into my dislikes. First and foremost, the volume control isn t great, its machined aluminum and finished beautifully but its a tad jiggly feeling. Turning and pressing don t feel as solid as I d like. Given that there are no other physical controls and everything is adjusted via a combination of pressing and turning the knob, I wish it was a bit more solid. It seems reliable enough, but only time will tell. Second issue is with the LCD display, It is nice and sharp, informative, and you can even adjust the color to a few presets, but it s VERY bright, an adjustment for brightness would be very welcome. The background is more gray than black due to the way too bright back light. Keep this in mind if that sort of thing bothers you. The control scheme, while easy enough, is a little tedious with all the turning and pressing of the volume knob. It wouldn t have killed them to add dedicated power and select buttons. Finally, the remote. The remote looks nice, however it has 2 pretty major issues. Firstly, the battery while included, was dead. No big deal there, just a standard CR2032 button battery. More importantly, There are 3 lettered buttons A, B, and C. Pressing A does nothing, however if you press B or C, the remote will STOP working. Turns out, if you press A again it works. To SMSLs credit, the mostly readable manual states buttons B and C to be Invalid My only thought here is this remote may be universal for other of their products and these letters are for unused mode selection. Leave those buttons alone and you ll be fine, but if the remote ever stops working, just press A first, will save some aggravation for sure. All the other buttons work fine and as expected. Well that s about it.This amp is compact, very nice looking, and has not just amazing sound quality, but plenty of power to back it up. Looking past the fairly minor quirks, and as long as it holds up, I m a very satisfied customer and would buy this again in a heartbeat.Read full 131 ratings for SMSL AD18 80W2 Bluetooth 4.2 HiFi USB DSP Digital Decoding Power Amplifier at Amazon Reviews
