Indiana Opera Buff: “SOLO PIANO …Read more
I feel like an idiot. This is the third set of these speakers I have purchased and I soon will have returned them all. The first set had a rough edge to the treble so I sent them back. I was new at this then and did not realize that they needed to be broken in. They were, by far, the best of the three. The second set were so bright and tinny that I had to turn the treble down to -10. I returned them immediately. This third set is about halfway between, with the treble set at -6. In addition, I have the 2 kHz on my equalizer turned down 3 4 of the way, and the 4 kHz turned down halfway. I contacted Elac, and they suggested a break-in period of 12-24 hours. I then consulted Google, and a break-in period of 10-30 hours was recommended for the tweeters. I surpassed them all and gritted my teeth through 32 hours of break-in time. It really didn t make a noticeable difference. Elac also said that the problem might be because I was using an 8 ohm receiver so I purchased a receiver that was substantially more expensive than my current one and able to accommodate these 6 ohm speakers. I had actually auditioned this receiver before, and I hoped it might be a good fit for these speakers. The receiver I purchased sounds rather warm. Since these Elac speakers are actually a bit dry sounding therefore their amazing clarity , I thought it might be a good fit. Unfortunately, it didn t make any difference in the unpleasant treble edge I was hearing on some singer s voices. By the way, for all of you bass hogs out there I am not one of them , these speakers have plenty of bass, and I actually turned the bass down to -2 a couple times to achieve a more natural effect. I found that solo piano and guitar music sounded fine, but that these speakers made violins sound squeaky. My theory is that this excessive treble edge occurred when Andrew Jones changed the treble maximum from the 20 kHz that it had on the F6 to 35 kHz on the F6.2. A customer service rep at Crutchfield listened to my story and thought that since I could high frequencies so well, I would have been happier with Elac s original debut F6 speakers. A representative at Elac told me the exact same thing. Too bad they don t make them anymore, though I could probably find a used pair somewhere. For now, I will continue to content myself with my vintage Marantz speakers, which are superior to these in every way except one. The Elac speakers are beautiful pieces of furniture.
